A dark and tender post-apocalyptic love story set in the aftermath of a bloody war.

In a city where humans and Darklings are now separated by a high wall and tensions between the two races still simmer after a terrible war, sixteen-year-olds Ash Fisher, a half-blood Darkling, and Natalie Buchanan, a human and the daughter of the Emissary, meet and do the unthinkable—they fall in love. Bonded by a mysterious connection that causes Ash’s long-dormant heart to beat, Ash and Natalie first deny and then struggle to fight their forbidden feelings for each other, knowing if they’re caught, they’ll be executed—but their feelings are too strong.

When Ash and Natalie then find themselves at the center of a deadly conspiracy that threatens to pull the humans and Darklings back into war, they must make hard choices that could result in both their deaths.

When I first saw the cover of The Black City, it felt very mysterious to me. I usually see a rose that the petals were slowly falling or taken away with the wind, but this one is totally different. The petals or should I say the rose was shattering into tiny little pieces. After that it just came to my mind that there must be something very unique upon those pages. I think that maybe the characters and the setting will result into a deep shattered moments and emotions.

As I was reading the story, it somehow felt very familiar for me to think that the setting was set on a war. Elizabeth Richards gives full detail of everything inside and out of the place. I felt that I'm inside The Black City. The walls that divides people apart from another creatures. The vampires. She put new identity with the vampires. I totally loved that part. Vampires and Humans exist together from a new way, Elizabeth Richards suddenly bring some spice on it when there are unexpected events that happens with the characters. Ash was created as a very brave and fierce young man who never showed any sign of defeat. He always stand up for the people that he loves, he believes, and most of all he wanted to know more about his entire being. His thoughts were very clear and thoroughly made into something very distinct.

Natalie on the other hand, from the first part, she seems lost from the things that she wanted to do. She's finding her reasons to have something worth fighting for. She has a mindful of ideas in stored within everytime she faces tragic situations. She became strong and competitive at the same time. I admire how Natalie progress her feelings and emotions when she realized that there are people who destroys them slowly.

Reading their point of views were totally fun and challenging. I came to realize how their feelings intertwined with each other since I can read both of their thoughts. It's simple yet elegantly made.

The Black City can welcome your mind with unexpected events. Those walls and creatures can bring sudden fire within your mind. You'll feel every scream and pain of the characters. It'll keep your eyes crave for more with Ash and Natalie. The Black City shows how politics can lead into rebellion. It describes how far the character can endure their emotions when the world seems to object them. If you wanted a novel that can make you feel shocked and angry and felt loved at the same time, you better get a hold of this one.
