While the other girls in the walled city-state of Baalboden learn to sew and dance, Rachel Adams learns to track and hunt. While they bend like reeds to the will of their male Protectors, she uses hers for sparring practice.

When Rachel's father fails to return from a courier mission and is declared dead, the city's brutal Commander assigns Rachel a new Protector: her father's apprentice, Logan—the boy she declared her love to and who turned her down two years before. Left with nothing but fierce belief in her father's survival, Rachel decides to escape and find him herself.

As Rachel and Logan battle their way through the Wasteland, stalked by a monster that can't be killed and an army of assassins out for blood, they discover romance, heartbreak, and a truth that will incite a war decades in the making.

"Diplomacy is a lot easier to accomplish if you've got your foe on his knees hoping you don't lop off his head"

- Logan

I won a signed copy of Defiance last year from National Bookstore, since then it was piled down on my to-read list. After all this time, I keep on thinking why I haven't read the book the moment I received it.

The cover already captivates me. Two-thumbs up on whoever made the cover look ravishing and full of darkness. A lady surrounded with pure steel blackness and beneath her is a nation full of steady walls, that totally knocked me out have an interest on reading it. To add more of it, the synopsis has the words to make me feel engage to read it.

Baalboden is an organized setting yet full of lies beneath it. I just loved how CJ Redwine created it with such unique citizens and also the rules that binds them. The rules and law clearly made it more engaging to read. The place is so strict and yet there are people who can sneak upon things that are forbidden. To add more of it, the high-steady walls that protects them and the outside wilderness of Defiance is so unpredictable. I loved every surprises that I read everytime the characters get to describe every bits of the setting.

Rachel is already fearless from the start yet she feels broken without her father. I loved the way she thinks of all the strategy that she must do in order to escape and bring back the way her life was when Oliver, Jared, and her father were all together. She was a character made of stone who was suddenly crashed until her heart turned into ashes, yet Logan is always there reaching and always finds her to drag her out into darkness.

The spark between Rachel and Logan are not entirely seen nor felt on the first chapter and that's what makes me more feel entitled to finish every chapter. Because once you've read every chapter of their thoughts, you'll just keep on thinking "What about your romantic and emotional feeling for her/him!". It's intriguing to know actually since the book intertwined with the thoughts of Rachel and Logan. But as the story goes by, I gradually felt the sensation of Logan's perspective of being attracted on Rachel's guts and beauty.

Another thing that is undeniably outstanding is the BEST and WORST case scenarios Logan can think of events. Even if his in the middle of chaos or danger, he can somehow think straight through a way to solve every problem and make amendments of it, yet he can't think clearly on what would be the appropriate sceanrios everytime he's with Rachel. (Aww, so cute I want to pinch you.)

Defiance is a novel that can definitely bring a whole lot more meaning about heroines. The words screaming out in their thoughts are highly-enticing to read, to add some of it, romanticism mixed out in action which made it so compelling to read.

This is me when I was reading Defiance, specifically reading Logan's perspective

She isn't my Protector. I'm hers. And I'm not dropping this until I get her promise.

...and the affection of her face makes me feel like the richest man in the world.

Rachel and I get separated? I can find her anywhere.

It takes facing imminent death to realize I love her.
