Synopsis :

I am tired of being used, hurt, and cast aside.

Adelina Amouteru is a survivor of the blood fever. A decade ago, the deadly illness swept through her nation. Most of the infected perished, while many of the children who survived were left with strange markings. Adelina’s black hair turned silver, her lashes went pale, and now she has only a jagged scar where her left eye once was. Her cruel father believes she is a malfetto, an abomination, ruining their family’s good name and standing in the way of their fortune. But some of the fever’s survivors are rumored to possess more than just scars—they are believed to have mysterious and powerful gifts, and though their identities remain secret, they have come to be called the Young Elites.

Teren Santoro works for the king. As Leader of the Inquisition Axis, it is his job to seek out the Young Elites, to destroy them before they destroy the nation. He believes the Young Elites to be dangerous and vengeful, but it’s Teren who may possess the darkest secret of all.

Enzo Valenciano is a member of the Dagger Society. This secret sect of Young Elites seeks out others like them before the Inquisition Axis can. But when the Daggers find Adelina, they discover someone with powers like they’ve never seen.

Adelina wants to believe Enzo is on her side, and that Teren is the true enemy. But the lives of these three will collide in unexpected ways, as each fights a very different and personal battle. But of one thing they are all certain: Adelina has abilities that shouldn’t belong in this world. A vengeful blackness in her heart. And a desire to destroy all who dare to cross her.

It is my turn to use. My turn to hurt.

“Be true to yourself. But that’s something everyone says and on one means. No one wants you to be yourself. They want you to be the version of yourself that they like.”
- Adelina Amouteru

First book of Marie Lu's The Young Elites brings the new shift of high-fantasy. The story emerged when the blood fever that swept away the whole city, covering the innocents with an illness they have no idea how to even cure. It may seem like an ordinary epidemic case, but from that point, selected people were deeply affected - this arise the idea of malfettos. The rejected and cursed ones. People who were claimed to possess an inhumane ability to control the nature and life itself.

As the protagonist, Adelina being claimed as her father to be a malfetto which possesses a power, her childhood was deeply bruised. Surrounded by white lies and accusations, she grew up with fear, anger and despair. On the other hand, her sister Violetta which her father claims to be their only chance to have a good life once she'll be betrothed is the sole person who gave her the love that she's been wanting to have. No pretensions at all. This binds her to stand up straight every single day and accepts the way her father treats her like a mess.

Of course, for every stored feelings of anger, despair and rejection, it is ought to let it out at one point in a lifetime. This manifested the shadows, fogs and illusions of Adelina's ability as a malfetto. The beast inside her heart suddenly came out and ripped of to its cage swallowing her father without any hesitations. It was majestic to see how the fears of one's character became the source of her bravery to fight for her single lifetime.

Rather than being surrounded with the inhumane voices of her father eating her soul, she joined the Dagger Society. They call themselves as Elites not malfetto's. Little did she know there are more tragedies and dangers involved in joining in. From this point, Adelina met several people like her, Enzo and Rafaelle who also have another different not so quite of a good memories when blood fever took their normal lives.

The Young Elites marked the start to outrun the king and queen most specially. To prove themselves how they've chosen the wrong enemy to mess with. This idea is highly inspiring for me. Marie Lu was able to execute a rebellion in a hideous way. The interchanging of point of views brought me into another situation of the story. Both are equally unnerving, dark and satisfying. I can definitely cannot get enough into a single point of view of a character.

Thrilling part here is that, I was slowly seeing the progress of the anger and anxiety of the characters. Adelina, Enzo, Rafaelle, Teren and the members of the Young Elites, all of them are vibrant with the emotions that keeps on coming up in every chapter. In short, this is betrayal, treachery and love in a whole package. Aside from this, the ending still hangs from the choices and new path of the protagonists/antagonists situations in their journey. This is the reason I'll keep an eye out on the sequel.
